Pros:
Recently renovated, responsive maintenance team.
Cons:
We were initially shown an apartment on the third floor, but when we went to sign the lease, they offered us a fourth-floor apartment in a classic bait-and-switch. As this was a prewar building, this meant walking up and down three flights of stairs every day.
Although the unit was recently renovated, that did little to disguise the deteriorating nature of the building. Clogged and overflowing toilets (9/13/21, 9/23/21, 12/23/21), a shower that wouldn't turn on (10/3/21), wood coming up from the floors (10/25/21, 11/15/21), a leaking radiator (12/22/21), flickering lights (1/2/22, 2/27/22), and more. Fortunately, the maintenance team has been responsive to service requests, but the repeated need to submit tickets is still hazardous and frustrating.
This apartment is not worth the $3,300 they charge us monthly. And the worst part—they offered us a lease renewal at $5,500 monthly, with no room for negotiation. There is no universe in which I would pay a 63% increase for a fourth-floor walk-up with poor living conditions, 15 minutes from the nearest subway.
Advice to owner:
Be upfront about what living here entails, and charge an appropriate rental rate.
