bringing gentrification to Harlem
Former Tenant
Pros:
relatively quiet for the area
close to public transit
walking distance from 3-4 grocery stores
Cons:
landlord raised my rent $100 each year without doing any repairs/updates to the apartment
bathroom has no window or vent so there’s black mold in the shower and the cheap cabinets are damaged from the humidity (i asked him to address this when he raised rent but got no response)
cockroaches in common spaces (often dead but left in hallways for weeks) but have killed a few in my apt
neighbors complain about everything & landlord has tried to ban incense & vaping
landlord also insisted on holding an open house 2 days prior to my official move out date and had open house with all of my belongings and cat in the apartment. i have paid through the end of the month (writing this on the 2nd) and he refused to wait till i am gone on the 5th.
landlord is extremely childish and passive aggressive hence the title of the review. once i said i was not renewing he became pushy, aggressive & condescending. He had to mention in every text how he was “fighting off prospective tenants” & “getting offers for more” after i said the reason i’m moving is because i cannot afford new rent.
now is arguing with me about security deposit even tho the apartment has sat empty for 2 weeks.
don’t fall for his scam, i found a rent stabilized apartment that is 3x the size and $1,000 less in rent on street easy within two weeks of deciding to move. there is better out there

he is also why harlem is becoming gentrified, the requirements for this shoebox apartment are laughable and the only ppl that qualify are rich white ppl who come to Harlem and call the police on the beautiful culture and community that exists there.
Advice to owner:
be less greedy, act your age
