Overall great place to live
Pros
Smaller building with mostly family, and two units rented out. Everyone knows each other, and while the family members have their differences amongst them, everyone's very kind to the tenants and do their best to keep the tenants happy / comfortable. After some boiler issues the last couple winters, the heat and hot water work GREAT now South-facing bedroom windows, mostly unobstructed views out the back and side windows, lots of natural light and trees (and bamboo!) Southside Coffee a couple doors down Radiators aren't super noisy Back bedroom windows face a wall of bamboo and trees, which mostly obscure other neighbors so offers a good deal of privacy
Cons
The family who owns and live in the building sometimes yell at each other in the stairwell, lol but it's largely fine. I don't mind, but there's a daycare right next door, so 2x a day the little ones will be outside loudly playing for an hour or so around 11am and 5pm It's an old, tired building, so the electricity dims sometimes, you can't use more than one heat-generating appliance at a time otherwise you'll have to go down to flip the circuit breaker switch Zero right angles in our unit from a century of things shifting and settling, but one could also argue it adds to the charm There's a backyard, but no indication whether tenants are welcome to use it or not No laundry or available storage space in basement. All full of family's belongings Stairwell kind of cluttered with family's belongings, recycling, etc.
Advice to the owners
