Pretty alright but renting for way above it's value now
Former Tenant
Pros:
Well located, management was responsive with enough pestering
Cons:
Broken appliances upon move-in, management's response to package theft was to change the door code and refuse to tell us what the new one was, forcing us to use the key, had to fight to get our deposit back

Experience at 711 Saint Marks
Former Tenant
Pros:
Apartment is in a prime Crown Heights location. My unit was sunny and neighbors are respectful.
Cons:
Management is not very accessible in the event that you need them. We dealt with some pests and heat and water issues, and struggled to contact management.

A loud, dirty building to avoid
Former Tenant
Pros:
Our apartment is large for the amount we pay for rent.
Cons:
Where to start. There is a lot wrong here so buckle up. This building is NOISY. Not so much outside noise but noise within the building. We can hear every single thing our upstairs neighbors do, can hear full conversations they have, etc. Other tenants blast music full-volume with heavy bass for hours that permeates the entire building. There must be little to no insulation between walls/floors/ceilings. We play white noise about 18 hours a day and often wear headphones or earplugs to block out the noise while we’re working. Our hot water goes out 1-2 times per week. It’s winter and an old building so we can cut some slack there but we’ve stopped even making complaints because of how often it happens. We just wait for it to come back on eventually. Sometimes we boil water for baths like it’s 1850 if we’re feeling desperate. There is a group of men (who do not live in the building) who regularly post up in the vestibule, openly hot-boxing and selling whatever it is they’re smoking. They’re perfectly nice people but we smell like cigarettes/weed all the time because we have to walk through it and it often makes it’s way into the apartment. They also lean against the doors so we literally have to knock on the front door from inside the building just to leave. Packages get stolen constantly. Like, sometimes within minutes of drop off. There are cameras but they don’t work and management seems fully unmotivated when it comes to fixing them. Also a handful of mailboxes are broken and just hang open with mail falling out. This brings us to trash. There is so much trash. Just trash everywhere. The “mail room” is always full of discarded letters/junk mail strewn about, empty packages left behind from whoever stole the contents, trash out front that sometimes doesn’t get picked up for what feels like weeks. There are also SO MANY RATS. No pests in the apartment or building itself (that we’ve witnessed) but out front is it’s own ballgame. Management is responsive but rarely all that helpful with the issues. It’s sort of a fend for yourself situation. Needless to say, we are deeply looking forward to our lease ending so we can gtfo
Advice to owner:
Number one - Fix the damn cameras. Other thoughts - Require carpeting/rugs in upstairs apartments. Take care of the trash. Update the water heaters. Require keys for entry to building. Maybe put a locked gate out front to keep people from loitering in the lobby. Maybe a locked area for packages as well.

Not a great place
Former Tenant
Pros:
Large space, not too expensive
Cons:
Group of anywhere from 2-10 men, not tenants, loiter in front of building and often in lobby. Apparent drug dealers who also smoke weed which fills the entire first floor w smell. Neighbor noise is high, no insulation between apartments. Garbage out front all the time and in the courtyards. Packages stolen.
Advice to owner:
Take care of the issue of loiterers out front and make a dedicated package room with lock.

711 Saint Marks- WOOF
Former Tenant
Pros:
The Neighborhood, fellow tenants, bike storage, proximity to the A Train
Cons:
The bathroom ceiling in our unit caved in MORE THAN ONCE- THREE TIMES in fact and the management company made us wait ALL WEEKEND with NO BATHROOM. I called 311 and lodged as many complaints as I could but it didn’t matter. Also ROACHES.
Advice to owner:
Do....better? Your tenants PAY YOU to take care of the building. We all deserve to live in a safe and sanitary apartment.

Terrible land lord
Former Tenant
Pros:
Good location, right next to everything you need. Neighbors don’t ever bother you, everyone seems to be very in and out.
Cons:
The landlord was terrible. Very non-responsive to major issues. There were constant plumbing issues that never got addressed. There also looked to be a mold problem.
Advice to owner:
Be more compassionate and responsive.
