Good Location, Shady Landlord
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location, bay window. Good water pressure when the hot water was on.
Cons:
Ongoing gas and carbon monoxide leaks. Landlord tried leasing ground floor to tenants, but there are only two units. The first and ground floors are legally 1 unit. The second unit is the top floor. Stoop/ ground level apt has 2 legal bedrooms and one room illegally marketed as a bedroom with no windows. Basement had a collapsed chimney and gas leak that the landlord refused to address. Occasional mice. No gate at the yard wall, which was usually fine except during big events like the West Indian Day parade when we ended up with trash and lots of ppl in our yard and on our stoop. A lot of noise & rumbling from the subway. A few of the windows were cracked when we moved in and the landlord wouldn’t fix them. Had to insist that they paint and finish installing doorknobs and the main lock before moving in. When we complained about the gas leak and eventually reported it to ConEd, they turned off the heater and we had no hot water for a few weeks. ConEs issued a violation for illegal and unsafe gas hookups. The landlord sent multiple locksmiths w/o ID to try and lock us out. I had to threaten to call the police to get them to leave. Noisy upstairs neighbor always smoking weed. Withheld last months rent bc she kept trying to lock us out, wouldn’t fix the gas leak, and we had zero confidence we would get our security deposit back. Nightmare. Don’t move here.
