Landlady will harass you
Former Tenant
Pros:
We didn’t listen to our gut telling us to steer clear of the owner because the apartment is very beautiful, the neighborhood is lovely and there is lots of natural light. It’s not worth it.
Cons:
We were required to install rugs and rug pads for soundproofing. We agreed, but after we bought them, the land lady who lives below would constantly email us to complain about our footsteps. Then she asked us to buy new rugs that were thicker, after we had already bought rugs and rug pads for the whole house. We showed her pictures of the floor coverage, tried to come to an agreement, but she wouldn’t stop. We’re a pretty low-key couple, most of our nights were spent watching a movie or playing games. We felt uncomfortable in our home after she sent multiple emails saying we “violated our lease agreement,” a claim she made up because she didn’t like our rugs. She spent the entire 6 months of our stay emailing us and texting us to complain and make up lies about us “threatening” her with our noise. She asked us to break our lease and leave early and even threatened to complain to my mom about our “stomping, stamping footsteps” LOL. When we passed her on the street she would just glare at us and wouldn’t say hi back. We decided to leave early because it got so ridiculous. After we asked to have a walkthrough of the apartment to get our security deposit back, she emailed to say she “didn’t feel safe” in our presence and refused. We did get the deposit mailed to us in the end.
We later saw her new listing, where she raised the rent -___- we’re still not sure how much of her behavior was just trying to get us out, since we our rent was probably lower b/c COVID.
Advice to owner:
Don’t rent out your top floor! If the noise is really that bad, provide the rugs you think are suitable or don’t have upstairs tenants.
