Moses Karpen is a ruthless landlord.
Former Tenant
Pros:
The building is located in an amazing area. Two block for the east river, domino park, close to many restaurants, vintage and more moderm stores/ local boutiques, indy and other cinemas, theaters…
Cons:
You can see many rats around the building and its always dirty. No building number outside.
The landlord is ruthless just left all four apartments without heat, hot water and cooking gas because he refuses to pay the bills. In the middle of the winter. Allegedly because he has no money. If you Google his name Moses Karpen and Moses Lefkowitz they both just both a 6.5 million retain building. But they won’t pay $20,000 for this old building’s gas. They restored the heat and hot water by an illegal connection to another gas line. But still left some tenants without cooking gas.
This happened right after one of them asked all tenants to move ASAP because they want to sell the building and want it empty before February. After some resistance from the tenants they offered a ridiculous miserable amount of $10.000 if the move ASAP.
Advice to owner:
Now on days people are not easy to be intimidated. A lot of information is available online. Any person can read about tenant harassment and tenants rights. Moses Karpen, you have an long history of building violations, complaints and tenants harassment and it’s all available online. Instead of trying to get ride of a building because for you it’s pocket change, treat your tenants like human beings. Do things the right legal gay, maybe then you don’t have to file for bankruptcy and put you money under some else’s name.
