not the worst but definitely not good
Former Tenant
Pros:
laundry in basement, pet-friendly, near the subway
Cons:
the landlords are rude, not responsive, and do not handle things in a timely fashion (if they’re handled at all). neighbors were very noisy

Decent apartment - but comes with terms & conditions
Former Tenant
Pros:
Very modern with good stainless steel appliances and washer/dryer in basement. A lot of greenery outside of the kitchen window which is nice considering the area itself is pretty industrial.
Cons:
They raised rent by $1600, forcing three units (including myself) to vacate. Then they waited until the last minute to find a new tenant and pressured me to move out before my last month was up. Every day, they would call and ask, “Have you moved out yet?” - although I had paid for the full month and had every right to be there until the 31st. I’d get calls from them up to six times a day. It got so out of hand, I had to block their number and keep all correspondence limited to email.
My electricity bill was also astronomical even though I almost never ran my AC. I have reason to believe that the unit was deceptively wired to have the tenant pay for more than their unit alone. I reported it to ConEd, and they said my electrical usage was suspiciously high considering the size of my apartment. I’d be out of town for half the month, and my electric bill would still be $200 with no reasonable explanation. I questioned maintenance about it, and they brushed it off. ConEd claims to have initiated an investigation.
And the cherry on top is that they still haven’t returned my security deposit even though NYC law requires it to be returned within 14 days of vacating. Apartment is in perfect shape, but honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to fabricate an excuse to keep my deposit. Very untrustworthy people.
Advice to owner:
As a responsible renter who always paid on time and caused little commotion despite management’s shortcomings, I’ve never felt more like a cog in the real estate machine. Having such a high turnover with tenants is a reflection of greed. I now live in a family-owned building where the owner knows my name, where I’m from, what I do for work - and it has made all the difference. One family has lived here for 20+ years. That’s the relationship you should strive for.
