the house is a very interesting historical building in Bushwick, I really love it, it's unique and beautiful
the landlord is nice and super helpful: - clear instructions how to find the house, how to commute from the aiport etc., clear instructions on how the keys, locks, kitchen, lights, laundry etc. works. - amazing book collection in the living room - the host is inspiring person and it's an inspiring artistic environment

Great short stay
Former Tenant
Pros:
The house is safe and clean. Well located, 5min away from the MTA (Gates Ave), also close to shops. Ellen is responsive and very nice.
Cons:
At night the street can be noisy with cars blasting music.

A quiet place to recharge in between NY pit stops
Former Tenant
Pros:
Big place, lots of space between the people living there as there are four floors, nice sun light, close to subway, big backyard and garden,
Cons:
Drafty during storms, electric layout of plugs was strange as the wiring is old school
Advice to owner:
Fix the back spotlight, upgrade the garbage cans,

Transformative but subtle
Former Tenant
Pros:
Has a lot of character, well maintained, peaceful, a great place to catch your breath in the midst of a hectic city life
Cons:
A little drafty in the winter because it is an old house, especially the side that faces north. The house is double insulated but there still can be a chill in the air, which can be offset by turning up the heat.
Advice to owner:
Don;t quite know what to say about the drafty north side, maybe thick curtains would help?

Great Location and Great Company
Former Tenant
Pros:
The house is a beautiful, historic building with a storied past. The furniture is eclectic and fun and makes the place feel very homely. The building feels safe because it is raised from street level and there are multiple locks. All appliances are managed extremely well and maintenance is wonderful. The house has a calming energy and a protective feeling to it that I found very appealing. Great experience!
Cons:
The neighbours at the end of the road can be a bit rowdy, but the area is otherwise excellent.

A hidden gem
Former Tenant
Pros:
I lived there for 1 year, the home and decor is really sweet. I found my relationship with the homeowner the useful and they did not violate or overextend into my personal space. They gave me back my full deposit. It seems that Ellen really does care about people and she was always fair with me. There is also a backyard which you can plant food in. My price didn't raise even though it could have according to market value. I found that Ellen uses direct communication so she will say exactly the thing without any fluff behind it and this is jarring to some people because they're not used to people exactly the thing. And I appreciate your communication so that's something to consider. She also tells you that she uses direct communication.
Cons:
It's a duplex and sometimes the downstairs neighbors would leave dog poop in the backyard or leave their things around. Sometimes people in the community would throw trash in the tree in front of the house.

Please Stay Away
Former Tenant
Pros:
Convenient area and lovely neighbors.
Cons:
I’ve come to believe there is no scenario in which Ellen will not find a way to steal your security deposit, or place blame on tenants for her own obvious neglect to the property. Save yourself the stress and look elsewhere for housing. She is an abusive landlord.
Advice to owner:
Take responsibility for maintaining your own property. Don’t take advantage of and abuse young artists looking for a secure place to live. If you can’t, or won’t, respect tenants and their privacy, maybe don’t have them.

Extremely rude and mean landlady who stole my deposit and threw away my ...
Former Tenant
Pros:
The building’s located in a good area of bushwick. And it’s kept clean.
Cons:
The landlady is an artist in her 60s. I rented one room on the second floor where she lives. It was nice when she was over seas teaching, but she ended up stealing my deposit in the midst of pandemic and threatened me that if I sued her, my Artist Visa status would be in danger. Which I knew it was bs, but was not emotionally in a place to pursue a legal act. She also unapologetically threw away my dry groceries that were kept in the fridge, while I was quarantining with my brother for a couple of months AND WHILE PAYING RENT.
Advice to owner:
You know what you did Ellen. Sorry that despite all of the wealth you have, you decided stealing some Deposit money from a fellow struggling artist was worth your dignity as a person.
