LIC Nightmare Landlord, Jury Rigged Apartment, Steer Well Clear
Pros
Location. That is it.
Cons
Lived in basement apartment for 9 years. Landlord does everything on the cheap. Makes the outside 'pretty' but your apartment leaks heat. Con Ed bills in the 250-300$ b/c crap heating system and no weather proofing of doors. Blocks the back entrance which is a fire exit. Has an illegally shared meter for our first floor apartment which she lied about. The shower wall collapsed and while it was deteriorating she ignored our request for fixing it for months. The apartment flooded 5 separate times and she blew it off, until the worst time where her husband laughed at our flooding issues. They stand outside your window for hours on weekends talking to random people, you feel you're being overlooked, it's so intrusive. Meanwhile they have a super cute garden in the back. Cut off our cable to our internet with no thought to us. While fixing the stairs over our entrance, the ceiling light started to fall and she attempted to blame us. Almost every time we brought out recycling she would come down minutes later to go through it. AFTER we moved in she then informed us we couldn't hang anything on the walls, she didn't want nail-holes, had to shovel our entryway, sweep our entryway, and keep the water running in the taps when it got below freezing! It's a tiny, railroad apartment. Who the heck could sleep through that? You can't run more than one appliance at a time because it shuts down the whole apartment. (How I found out she was stealing our electricity.) The pipe below the kitchen sink was jury-rigged and covered so when it rotted and leaked into the floor we didn't know until it broke right before family was visiting. To be blunt, she has an abrasive, disparaging attitude. Very snappy and accusatory. Eager to blame issues of the apartment on you. Yes, I stayed here too long because I loved the area. But this landlord, Lydia, is a nightmare, she is a wacko, and frankly I noticed some racist tendencies although nothing overt. The few times I met her sister, co-landlord although she never told us that when we signed the lease, was even nastier than her. I have every single thing here documented on video and text. Reach out if you want to know I will share.
Advice to the owners
Get professional help. When you rent, that is their home, not yours. Your not having someone to stay in your house, you are renting, big difference.
