Former Tenant
Pros:
Cheaper rent for a room in ASTORIA. Close to lots of Indian cuisine. Very close to trains
Cons:
Not a very clean building. The owners FILL the downstairs hallways with so much stuff it’s EMBARRASSING to bring anyone over. Landlord is EXTREMELY controlling. While everything started off great, after a number of years she became controlling. Was nosy about who was in my room with me (while the rooms are in a house, it is set up like apartment). She didn’t want you having any guests overnight AT ALL, even though this wasn’t mentioned prior. She absolutely refuses service animals which is illegal, throws away personal property without warning, enters the premises without warnings. NEVER REPAIRS ANYTHING. I had 4 outlets in my room. Only ONE was functional and the others were charred and blackened. She also does renovating in the other rooms without permits. So you wake up to pounding or dust everywhere. She was flexible with rent as far as when it was paid. But overall a TERRIBLE landlord. CONSTANTLY lets her kids get involved with her affairs because she doesn’t like dealing with anything. Overall by the end of my time there she was a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Very stressful and uncomfortable at the end. And be careful. She likes to lie and makeup excuses as to why she wants you out. (Oh I want to give the room to my grandson). I watched her do this to several people she just wanted out. Fortunately I knew my rights and she hates that. Save yourself the pain and suffering. Don’t waste your time there. She’ll be great in the beginning. But by the end she’s a holy terror.
Advice to owner:
Learn your responsibilities and the rights of the tenant. Your say is not the end all be all. And for the love of GOD start getting permits for your renovations. And stop using your family as excuses to get you out of everything.
