Building in Heart of Astoria (Steinway)
Former Tenant
Pros:
location, feels like safe area, landlord lives in building, quiet, neighbors are nice
Cons:
doors are mostly glass, no peephole, landlords are in building and will knock on door loudly without any warning, rent is via check that is slid under landlord's door
Advice to owner:
please replace the apartment doors and doorknobs! they are mostly glass and unsafe.

Lived here ‘12-16 and it was a good time.
Former Tenant
Pros:
I liked the location a lot, and also how safe it was. Nothing really happened on our street. Close to the subway and shops and things. The building was a little old and dusty but mostly okay. The landlords, an old Greek couple, lived right above us and they were really nice. Neighbors were quiet and friendly. All around a good find.
Cons:
Well, our cabinets were pretty old, a little falling apart, but it’s a pre-war building and it was my first apartment so I didn’t care too much. Sometimes there were mice and cockroaches but in the 4 years I lived there it was pretty rare to see them. My roommate told me when we moved out the landlord tried to keep the security deposit but ended up giving it back to us without too much fuss.
Advice to owner:
Maybe mop the main hallways now and again, and spray more frequently for pests. Also change the glass on the front door every once in a while. Otherwise keep doing what you’re doing!
